Soldering 101 - Soldering the Joint

Once the the joint has been prepared you can smoke it...  Wait that's a different tutorial.

Once the joint is prepared you are ready to apply the solder.

Cut yourself a 3 or 4 inch piece of solder to work with.

You should use the smallest Soldering Iron tip you have.  Nearly everything solder except for terminals, I use an 1/8" tip.

Ensure the Iron is hot by touching a piece of solder to the tip.  This serves dual purposes.  It tins the tip and checks the temperature.  You don't want the iron to heat up while in contact with a component.  This could cause damage to the component.

Once the iron is hot wipe in on the sponge to clean it then touch the tip to the component and wire simultaneously.

Place a small drop of solder between the 2 components and the iron tip to form a "Bridge".  This will cause heat to transfer better.  As soon as the bridge forms,  touch the solder to the joint.   As soon as the solder flows, pull the iron and solder from the joint and don't move the joint for a few seconds.

A good solder joint should take 1 to 3 seconds from start to finish.  Practice joining wire to get your time down.  This will prevent damage to components
